Historic Graveyards Initiative

The grave markers found in Boston's Historic Burial Grounds are some the earliest European inspired artifacts in the country. Many of the markers are sited public burial grounds in the city center and are a major tourist attraction. The damage observed on the markers include delamination of inscription faces, breaks along cleavage planes, losses, and open seams on the upward facing surfaces.

Over the past twenty years our team has treated thousands of markers. Many of the markers which need comprehensive treatments are brought to our studios for care. Doing the delicate work in controlled setting greatly improves the longevity of the repairs. Treatments include cleaning, stabilization of delamination, adhering broken pieces, loss compensation and application of mortar caps. Part of the process also includes cleaning and re-setting markers which are not in need comprehensive care, this work is done onsite.
